Seize the....Target Store?

Last weekend, I had the itch for a day trip. So along with my momma, we packed up my three kiddos and headed out of town to do some shopping. Now let me just say that in the morning as I got the kids fed, bathed and dressed; as I loaded up the car with anything that we could potentially need on our day out, my conscience told me to stay home. I should've listened...Target is just not the same with three little kids in tow. Here's a breakdown of Target with two toddlers and a five year old.

Rhylan: "Mom can we please go to the toys?"
Me: "You have to be a good boy through the entire store and then we will go visit the toys last."

Five seconds pass....

Rhylan: "Mom can we please go to the toys?"
Me: "You have to be a good boy through the entire store and then we will go visit the toys last."

You get the idea....

I finally cave and head to the toy section with the hopes that a new toy will keep Rhylan occupied so that I can happily browse the rest of the store. I had a big list of Target goals - curtains, decor, toddler clothes and accessories, shoes.....and ask me how much I accomplished? The answer is zero, nada, none.

Here are the rest of the Target events from the Zehnle cart:

1. Rhylan finally chooses a toy.
2. But it doesn't stop there. He now wants to see the movies and books. Crap...
3. Everly drops a Starbucks cup in an aisle.
4. Said Starbucks cup proceeds to explode all over the aisle.
5. Grandma heads to find an employee for clean up duty.
6. Everly proceeds to wail at the top of her lungs.
7. I was that parent; the one with the wailing toddler.
8. My guardian angel aka another mom of a toddler stops and offers a snack to suppress my wailing little girl. Thank YOU!
9. I then realize that Everly has soaked through her outfit. No wonder she's so angry.
10. Oh no! That's outfit number two for the day. This mom only packed two changes of clothes.
11. We head to the toddler clothes to buy an outfit in order to take her home in clean clothes.
12. Emersyn is her happy go lucky self while the chaos unfolds and says "sissy sissy" as Everly cries.
13. I give up on said Target goals.
14. We load back up in the car.
15. I head for home with a lesson learned.

Target is an escape for us Moms. I look forward to planning ahead for a child-free day where I can grab my latte and shop in peace. For now, I'll just look back and laugh at what I must've looked like in my role as that mom. Things can't always go as planned! But I will never forget this experience! I can feel prepared for anything and be ready to seize the day (or Target in this case), but you just never know how the day will unfold. You juts have to roll with it (in a red Target cart)!

  1. We will treat ourselves to a relaxing Target in the near future! Let's mark out calendars! xoxo

  2. Let me know and I can babysit while you and Danielle go shopping or vice a versa. If you need me to come there to watch them, I can do that too. We have left the store many of times with nothing because the little ones wouldn't behave. That is the only way they will learn not to act up in the store. Keep the reward at the end if they are deserving of it.....and don't torture yourself with the kids in the store if you can help it! :)

  3. I normally enjoy taking them places, but it's usually just the girls or just Rhylan! All three was a bit much and a humorous adventure that I'll never forget!

What I Learned from Frugal January

While I don't believe in new year resolutions, I do believe in goals, aspirations and dreams. As a society, we're made to feel that with each new year, we must make resolutions, which more often than not, fade by March or set us up for failure. The feeling of failure is never good for the spirit, so a couple of years ago, I decided to stop giving in to that societal pressure. I have found that self-reflection is an excellent place to begin a new year and set realistic goals. This year, I started by challenging myself to what I named Frugal January. It's exactly what it sounds like. I challenged myself to only spend on necessities. I gave up runs to the coffee shop and trips to TJ Maxx. I gave up frivolous, careless and impulse-based spending, no matter how big or small it was. I asked myself one question with every single purchase decision, "do I really need this?" If I could live without it, I declined it. Did this cause me physical pain at times? Yes! There were...

FAQ's

You may have noticed the viral photo of two twin girls in a stroller. Attached to the stroller is a sign showing the mother's response to the most common questions that she receives while out and about. I found it hilarious, because I totally understand where she's coming from. It also inspired me to make my own list! We're approaching the one year mark and I've heard it all! Here are the responses to the most common questions/statements that I get on a regular basis.  "Yes they are twins." "Yes they are mine." "Yes I am old enough to have kids." "No I did not use IVF." "They were conceived naturally." "No I was not trying to get pregnant with twins." "Yes I was surprised." "Yes my hands are full."  "Yes I am busy, but I love it!"  "Yes I DO have a job and do not stay home."   "They are not boys." "I am not exhausted or miserable at all. I lov...

No One Prepared Me for This

This is the part of motherhood that I feel no one prepared me for. Perhaps you can't really be prepared at all. I didn't think it would happen as quickly as it did.  I'm talking about the day you wake up and your firstborn child is looking you in the eye and well on the way to surpassing your height. Can we not?  Seriously!  Sending Rhylan to middle school last year was a very tough concept to grasp. I've come to terms with being the mother of a middle schooler. I mean...what choice do I have? In doing so, I've had a front row seat to extraordinary growth (and I'm not just talking about physically). I've watched him overcome so much. Whether it was constant encounters with a bully (no one prepares you for that either), watching him navigate tough decisions, strengthening his sportsmanship or taking accountability... I'm constantly amazed by him. Last year was fifth grade. He seemed like a baby walking into that giant middle school. We're currently im...
